When a person does not brush or floss their teeth thoroughly, food particles may remain in the mouth. These particles may rot and cause foul odors. In addition, food particles over time can promote the growth of bacteria, which can also cause foul odors. The bacteria can also lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Foods with strong odors also affect the air a person exhales. Foods commonly known to contribute to bad breath include onions and garlic, exotic spices (such as curry), some cheeses, fish, and acidic beverages such as coffee. Foods are absorbed into the bloodstream and then transferred to the lungs, causing noticeable odors when exhaled. These foods may also cause gastrointestinal upset and belching, which can contribute to bad breath. In addition, certain supplements such as fish oil capsules can contribute to bad breath.

Low carbohydrate diets may also cause what is known as 'ketone breath.' So-called 'low carb' diets cause the body to burn fat as its energy source. The end-product of making this energy are ketones, which cause a fruity acetone-like odor on the breath when exhaled.

Hi Rohit,

Both these profiles (drlirish and lirishchinnappa) are mine. I am dentist practising in bangalore. Yeah, bad breath is a common problem among many. It is espeically of a concern in people who are in the marketing field. I would advise you to visit a dentist once for a dental check up as deposits present on the teeth (referred to as calculus) is also one of the most common reasons for bad breath. Deposits on the teeth leads to infection in the gums resulting in foul smell in the mouth. One round of professional teeth cleaning can help in relieving the problem, also you need to brush twice daily.

Ok, thank doctor,

Yes, there are deposits. You are saying the same thing what other doctor I consulted told. I am scared people say teeth cleaning weakens teeth.. i do not want to lose my teeth early..

one more thing. I smoke a lot, a lot means a lot, is that also responsible for smelling breaths?

Sir, thanks for your valuable time and advise..

Rohit

Rohit,

This is a common misconception about teeth cleaning that the teeth become loose if you get them cleaned. The truth is, the teeth are already weakened by deposits that lead to formation of pus and loss of bone structure supporting the tooth. The tooth in such cases is held in place by the deposits, so when the deposits are removed the tooth tends to be weakened. However, not removing the deposits will lead to further damage to the bones ultimately resulting in the loss of tooth. So, getting the teeth cleaned will stop the bone loss occuring due to deposits present on the teeth.

Yes, smoking is not only cancerous but also leads to bad breath, that continues for many hours after smoking despite chewing any mint. So stop smoking, get your teeth cleaned and stay healthy generally and orally.
